How to Buy a Bed Frame:
Know the size of your mattress.
Before you start looking at bed frames, you first need to make sure that you have your mattress’ measurements written down. While some bed frames are marketed as queen sized or king-sized, there is no current standard that manufacturers follow when it comes to sizes. Because of this, it is important that you measure the height, length, and width of your mattress before going on a shopping hunt.
Consider the space of your bedroom.
Your bedframe’s size affects more than just your mattress. It will be the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom which means you have to make sure that you have enough space for the frame to fit along with all the other stuff you want in it (e.g. dresser, bedside table, TV stand). There should be half a meter of space between the bed frame and the rest of your furniture, so that you get enough space to move around it comfortably.
Factor in the height.
One of the reasons why it’s not ideal for you to leave your mattress on the floor is comfort. It’s not exactly comfortable to get out of bed when it’s down on the floor. The same goes for climbing onto the bed. So, when you’re considering the bed frame of your dreams, you need to look for one that will put your mattress at the right height. How do you calculate what is the right height? You need to factor in your own height, the height of the frame, the height of your mattress, and your age or health condition.
Ideally, the height of the bed and the bed frame combined should allow you to plant your feet firmly on the ground while you sit at the edge of the bed and be able to stand up easily. A bed that’s too low can be painful for someone with arthritis while a high bed can be difficult to get into.
Discover your style & type.
As we’ve already mentioned, bed frames come in all sorts of styles and designs. As the focal part of your room, your bed frame’s style is essential in creating the haven that you want. To help you determine what your style is, we have a list of questions below. We also list down the different styles available as well as the pros and cons of each one.
- What is the theme of your bedroom as well as your house?
- What is the color of the wall in your bedroom?
- What is the color of the other furniture in the bedroom?
- Will the design you are looking at match the flooring?
- What material are you after – plastic, wood, metal, leather, or faux leather?
The Platform Bed Frame
This is one of the most popular bed frames in the market. It has a sleek, low-profile design that can be used to support any type of mattress. They generally take up less space which makes them ideal for small rooms. They also look great in open spaces as their appearance does not create any visual clutter. However, because this style of bed frame is low to the ground, it is not a good choice for those who have knee or back problems.
The Upholstered Bed Frame
If you’re looking for the ultra-comfortable bed, then an upholstered bed frame should be right up your alley. It features a soft headboard as well as cushioned support which makes it the perfect place to snuggle up with a good book or an addicting Netflix series. Aside from the cushiness of this style, upholstered bed frames can come in a variety of colors and fabrics which makes them easy to match with your personal decor. However, the material also means that the bed frame requires more maintenance as they can easily stain or become dusty. Fabric is also not as durable as plastic, wood, or metal.
The Storage Bed
As the name implies, this style of bed frame features storage capabilities. It comes with its own built-in storage space which makes it an ideal option for apartments or other types of living spaces that have little room. However, this kind of bed frame tends to be heavy and therefore difficult to move. In addition, it costs a lot more compared to other styles.
The Sleigh Bed Frame
Obviously, this is a bed frame that looks similar to a sleigh. It features a high headboard and footboard. It can be made of solid wood or upholstered. It will definitely create a statement inside any bedroom. However, the presence of the footboard means that legroom is limited, so this is not an ideal option for people who are tall. Also, this style of bed frame is quite heavy and difficult to move. Moreover, it tends to be expensive.
Canopy Bed Frame
This type is also called the four-poster bed. It’s definitely the most stylish of them all. It can easily create a cozy nest just by draping some fabric on the canopy. The beauty of this design is steeped in history but has slowly become modernized that it can easily fit in with most bedroom decors. However, canopy bed frames take up a lot of space in terms of height. You’ll need tall ceilings to accommodate a bed frame such as this one. Moreover, it’s not easy to move which means you’ll most likely need to disassemble the frame whenever you want to move it outside the bedroom. Plus, the top of the canopy can accumulate dust which means regular cleaning is required.
