Wood Samples for Maple Furniture

Our maple furniture is created from solid wood, joined together with strong Amish wood joints and high quality hardware.

What is maple?: Maple has an indistinct grain pattern. It is offwhite in color; its other common names are 'brown maple' and 'maple'. Maple is a variegated, beautiful wood that looks particularly stunning in darker stains. Stain applied to maple is not uniform due to variations in grain and density -- this is part of its appeal. Its species name is Acer Rubrum. Its Janka rating (hardness and resistance to scrapes, gouges and cuts) is 950.

Please note that if you leave this page before clicking on 'Request Wood Samples', you'll lose any information you entered. If you'd like to order a variety of hardwoods and stains, please see our 'All Hardwood Samples' page.

Our wood samples are genuine pieces of hardwood that are hand-sanded and individually stained, and we reserve the right to limit quantities.

Hardwood Selection

Hardwood Seasoning

Our furniture is created from winter-cut trees, raised and harvested in the upper midwest. The hardwood logs are seasoned for twelve to sixteen months to dry them thoroughly, bringing the moisture content down to 8-10%.

The seasoned hardwood logs are cut into lumber in the dimensions needed for the particular piece, air dried for an additional six months, and then placed into a kiln with circulating air. This brings the moisture content down to around 6%.

Drying Kiln

After the lumber is dried, it is sorted through for select pieces of solid wood. Pieces with natural abrasions or flaws are used on the bottom or back of a piece (on a less visible portion). The best hardwood is saved for the tabletop, or the front of the dresser -- the sides that are in full view.

Custom Hardwood Samples

Mixed Wood Designs: For mixed hardwood and mixed stain designs, simply request our standard wood samples. The same stains are used on our mixed wood designs.

Distressed Wood Finish: Please see our section on distressed wood finish for details. Distressed samples are quite large, and are individually customized. Distressed wood finish adds 15% to the cost of our furniture.

Exotic Wood Species: We can create a furniture piece from an exotic hardwood species. The ones we have worked with most commonly are Mahogany, Birds Eye Maple (a special cut of hard maple) and Knotty Oak. We can provide a quote in one of these exotic species, but please be aware that they are not always available in large quantities. Birds Eye Maple, in particular, is generally used as an accent.

To Order Custom Wood Samples: Please call us at 888-900-5325 to order custom wood samples. We will ask for a $30 deposit that can be applied towards your order.
