Quarter Sawn Oak Hardwood Samples

What is quarter sawn oak hardwood?: Quarter sawn oak is cut against the grain to create a more varied appearance and texture. We use white oak for our quarter-sawn cuts, as it has additional contrast and 'ray flake' in the wood which comes out beautifully when cut at an angle. White Oak is a solid, sturdy wood that is uniform in texture and color. Its grain is relatively large, and takes on colored stain quite well. With age, its color will change take on minor amber tones. This is a minor change in color. Its species name is Quercus Alba, and its Janka rating (hardness and resistance to scrapes, gouges and cuts) is 1360.

Hardwood Selection

Hardwood Seasoning

Our furniture is created from winter-cut trees, raised and harvested in the upper midwest. The hardwood logs are seasoned for twelve to sixteen months to dry them thoroughly, bringing the moisture content down to 8-10%.

The seasoned hardwood logs are cut into lumber in the dimensions needed for the particular piece, air dried for an additional six months, and then placed into a kiln with circulating air. This brings the moisture content down to around 6%.

Drying Kiln

After the lumber is dried, it is sorted through for select pieces of solid wood. Pieces with natural abrasions or flaws are used on the bottom or back of a piece (on a less visible portion). The best hardwood is saved for the tabletop, or the front of the dresser -- the sides that are in full view.

Custom Hardwood Samples

Distressed Wood Finish: Please see our section on distressed wood finish for details. Distressed samples are quite large, and are individually customized. Distressed wood finish adds 15% to the cost of our furniture.

Exotic Wood Species: We can create a furniture piece from an exotic hardwood species. The ones we have worked with most commonly are Santos Mahogany (FSC certified), Birds Eye Maple (a special cut of hard maple) and Grey Elm. We can provide a quote in one of these exotic species, but please be aware that they are not always available in large quantities. Birds Eye Maple, in particular, is generally used as an accent.

To Request Custom Wood Samples: Please call us at 888-900-5325 to order custom wood samples. We will ask for a $25 deposit that can be applied towards your order.
