After 130 days at sea, and 8,000 nautical miles traveled, the Plastiki arrived yesterday at its final destination of Sydney, Australia. The expedition, which was led by environmental adventurer David de Rothschild, set sail just over four months ago from San Francisco, California, with the purpose of raising awareness of about oceanic pollution, plastic bottle issues, and environmental preservation in general. Ten crew members in total lived on the vessel, which was made of all recyclable products, including 12,ooo recycled plastic bottles. The Plastiki will be on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum throughout the month of August. A documentary film of the Plastiki voyage will also be produced in order to promote the ideals of de Rothschild’s non-profit organization, Adventure Ecology.
Here at Erik Organic, we’ve taken an interest in this environmental adventure, and we’ve been following the Plastiki’s progress. We’re glad to know the crew made it safely to their destination. It’s always inspiring to hear of the audacious things other environmentalists are doing throughout the world to bring awareness and positive change to environmental problems.
