Tall Kitchen Tables
For something out of the ordinary in your kitchen, choose the Barcelona Kitchen Table.
Three feet high, this table comes in chocolate cherry burnished to a deep, rich finish the color of strong English tea. The actual design, a crosshatched base with a square, non-tapered leg is classic Mission styling at its best.
Mission, also known as Arts and Crafts, or Craftsman, is a style developed as a backlash to the very complicated Victorian that preceded it throughout much of the nineteenth century.
Based on designs which ultimately became Swedish Modern, the first Mission furniture pieces evolved in California, and were referred to as countrified, even primitive, but struck a chord in the hearts and minds of Americans looking for a return to their roots and a simpler era.
The Barcelona, with its classic lines, slim styling, and cleverly accented tabletop (look for the dentil-type moldings) and base, blends well with any style, from Cottage to Contemporary and also comes in an eclectic and eye-catching blend of medium and midnight oak.
This latter cleverly contrasts the burnished gold of antique leather with a shade just shy of black. And the sturdy base easily supports the tabletop, fashioned from a full 1.5 inches of solid hardwood.
Unlike shorter and usually rectangular kitchen tables, the Barcelona suggests a lighter, less formal, more modern ambience – eat on the run, or bring in sushi. Or, if the Barcelona isn't quite your cut of fish, ask the Amish furniture artisans at Erik Organic to make it an Alexandria table, which tackles Primitive in high style, or Montrose, whose curving legs and svelte styling combine the simplicity of Shaker with a Cabriole curve to the legs. |
