Oval Kitchen Tables

Aesthetically speaking, oval kitchen tables have a leg up on square or rectangular tables because round is a shape commonly found in Nature, while square is not. In addition, the rounded corners give the illusion that the table is smaller than it really is, so today's more compact kitchens aren't overwhelmed. And perhaps most important, the gentle shape of an oval rescues an otherwise overly stiff and formal room, making it seem more cordial.

Physically, the oval shape removes those sharp corners that can be painful to hips and lethal to childish skulls. Of course, it's still possible to stumble against the edge of an oval table and get a good bruise, but the likelihood of limping as a result is greatly reduced.

Spatially, an oval kitchen table offers extra seating. This is particularly true with pedestal and trestle-style tables, where table legs do not interfere with a diner's ability to get their own legs under the table surface.
