Oak Kitchen Tables

When I think back to my childhood, one of the things I remember fondly is the huge, oak kitchen table that stood kitty corner from the stove, around which we would gather in the evening to eat.

Of all the hardwoods available to make furniture, especially tables, oak seems the most enduring, the most versatile, the most practical. In fact, oak was the favorite wood of many furniture designers and builders, from Arts and Crafts (Mission) guru Gustav Stickley to world-famous architect and builder Frank Lloyd Wright.

Americans love oak. You might almost call oak the most "American" of woods, because it stands up under pressure, has a diversified and sometimes strikingly distinct pattern, and offers the kind of tight grain and slightly ridged surface that, when aged, marks it as a survivor.

Erik Organic offers oak kitchen tables, made from wood sustainably grown and harvested, often from within 50 miles of the shop. This oak, toughened by rugged Upper Midwest winters, produces the finest examples of the species, delivering tables that are almost guaranteed to last as long as an oak tree takes to grow – for the uninformed, that is about a hundred years, though some oaks have been known to continue living for over 300 years.

No better example of an oak kitchen table exists anywhere, in my opinion, than Erik Organic's Craftsman Kitchen Table, shown in Lexington oak. This table, with its subtly curved legs, combines the best of simplicity and style. The carefully measured stretcher spacers add a fillip of interest to what is otherwise an ordinary cross formation, and the concave curvature of the legs adds an additional touch of style.

For similar styling in a table that folds to provide more room in today's smaller modern kitchens, choose the Gateleg Mission Table. Again, superb styling combines with a light finish to deliver all the golden goodness of oak wood in a table designed to become an heirloom.
