Narrow Kitchen Tables
In their heyday, long narrow kitchens were known as Pullman kitchens because they were almost identical, space- and layout-wise, to the long but narrow sleeping cars on passenger trains.
Also known as the one-wall kitchen, this style is often found in apartments, and is used to conserve space for living and sleeping areas. The design is great for those who only want to take two steps between the refrigerator and the stove, but doesn't accommodate the standard-sized kitchen table, generally at least 36 inches wide. In fact, this "standard size" table has to be wedged up against one wall to give room to pass through from the entry to the living area, and doing so eliminates at least one dining space.
Erik Organic can solve the problem of long, narrow kitchen spaces in any number of ways, from the 30-inch wide Shaker Kitchen Table (choose it in rustic oak for the real look and feel of Americana), or choose the 32-inch wide Mayfair Kitchen Table in custom hard maple for a taste of Primitive in a wood option famed for its durability and longevity.
For an even skinnier profile, and the kind of styling that works with everything from Mission (Arts and Crafts, Primitive) to Colonial, and right back into classical furniture styles like Queen Anne and Victorian, choose a drop leaf table with a Riverside base and a round tabletop with two leaves that, dropped, form a slim-line profile scarcely more than 15 inches deep.
If your choice is square or rectangular, you can choose a Gateleg (Duncan Phyfe) table design in Mission style – another slim profile piece that folds to seat two but extends to seat 10 in a pinch.
If you're not sure what you need, or how you want it to look, consult with Erik Organic's expert furniture designers and builders to get exactly the right piece for your long narrow room. |
