Drop Leaf Kitchen Tables

Any of our dining tables or kitchen tables can be created with drop leaves. This is generally done on smaller tables -- it generally isn't practical to add drop leaves to larger kitchen tables.

Drop Leaf Kitchen Tables

Drop leaf tables originated in the late 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, first as gateleg tables, later as Pembroke tables (an English derivation), and more recently as sofa tables.

Because they span such a wide period, drop leaf tables come with a variety of leg styles, from the early square, tapered Pembroke table leg to the turned Sheraton leg. Some examples of drop leaf tables from the Elizabethan (16th and 19th centuries) and Jacobean (17th century) periods can still be found in high-end antique shops.

A drop leaf table has a hinged leg that can be swung out to support a section of tabletop, or flattened against the table frame and the table top dropped, to create a narrower profile. This is particularly handy in small rooms, eat-in kitchens, and – as mentioned above – behind a sofa, with the table expanded for company.

Erik Organic's dedicated Amish craftsmen have crafted some exquisite examples of drop leaf tables, beginning with the Riverside, a classic table with two leaves mounted on quality hinges which presents a 42-inch profile opened and two thirds that with one leaf dropped. With both leaves down, the table's surface measures a narrow but attractive 15 inches (approximate measurement only).

Of course, any of the various styles of table can be modified to feature dropped leaves, though the technique works best with smaller tables and looks most attractive with rounded tabletops. An exception to that would be traditional Duncan Phyfe styling, which Erik Organic offers up in stylistic adaptations like the Montrose. Another good choice would be the Mission-styled Craftsman Kitchen Table, or the slightly more complex Sonora Kitchen Table.

Whatever your choice, rest assured your table will be made from sustainably grown and harvested hardwoods, hand and kiln-dried to assure your table is heirloom quality to last for generations.
