Oak Dining Table Details

Mission or Craftsman style furniture designs are timeless. Take, for example, Erik Organic's rustic oak Craftsman kitchen table, with its rugged yet graceful lines, accentuated by a variation on pedestal design which features four gracefully curved legs joined by elegantly simple stretchers in a cross pattern.

At first glance, the dining table seems merely plain. Looking again, one discovers that all the seemingly stark lines, from the apron to the stretchers, actually make the table look light and airy - an exquisite piece of furniture that wood be as much at home in a Colonial kitchen as in a 1930s-era Art Deco or Modern Danish dining area.

In fact the table is not light at all. From the deliciously finished top, which looks as smooth and dense as poured honey, to the legs, the table is constructed of solid, compact, sustainably harvested oak, with almost all structural members as thick as the tabletop created from 1.5-inch solid oak.

Even the rail, which seems to be purely utilitarian, sports several decorative dentils, or braces, that save the area from invisibility and harmonize perfectly with the flowing design of the legs.

Even more stylish, though far from plain, is the mahogany oak Turin dining table, with its interrupted dentil molding on the apron and curved, chamfered top. The legs, an adaptation of the pedestal style, are actually hollow and tapered but look like the pillars of a porch, implying the kind of solidity that says 'heirloom' without words. Add the bases, each of which has its own modified pillar, and the dining table literally shouts of the decades of use it will provide.

For those with a taste for the eclectic, the midnight oak Montreal dining table, with its integrated Lazy Susan and compact, oriental-looking curved legs around a double-stretcher support design, makes a statement that suggests durability doesn't have to be stodgy.
