Dining Chair Options: An Explanation of Terms

dining chair hardwood

Hardwood: Wood choice affects the appearance, durability and cost of our dining room chairs. See our hardwood sample section for details on available hardwoods.

For the cost conscious, oak or soft maple is the preferred option. Oak is very versatile and can be stained a number of different colors.

For added durability, we recommend hard maple and hickory. Both are exceptionally strong and durable woods.

Wood Finish: Select the finish to match your choice of hardwood. You can learn more about the qualities of these finishes in our hardwood sample pages.

Design: Choose between a chair with arms, and one without. This is often referred to as a side chair (no arms) and an arm chair (with arms). This option adds 4-5" to the chair width.

Padded Seat: We offer several upholstery options, utilizing both organic and standard materials.

Our most popular seat cover is standard leather, with a rounded seat. You can see leather seat photos in three different designs.

You can also browse through our selection of fabric colors and leather colors.

Testing the Comfort of a Dining Chair

We can send you a 'test chair' so that you can evaluate the quality of our materials and construction prior to placing an order. Please click here for more details on this option.

Custom Chairs

We can create dining chairs in nearly any custom size. The price varies depending on the amount of materials needed.

We can modify the design on any chair by adding or removing decorative elements. Common changes include flattening out the curve on part of a chair design, removing vertical slats, or combining the base on one chair with the top of another.

Mixed wood designs utilize more than one wood species to create a contrasting effect. You can see a several examples here: Photo 1, Photo 2 and Photo 3.

We can also create simple patterns with mixed stains, such as Honey Oak and Midnight Oak. The mixed stain option is significantly more limited than mixed wood, however.

I like to think about (my dining table) starting its life as a beautiful tree in the Minnesota woods and coming to us through a person who made it with his own hands. It's a beautiful object that I will love for years to come. I look forward to many happy meals with family and friends at this lovely table.
