Baby Crib Options: An Explanation of Terms
Hardwood: We offer eight standard hardwood choices on our cribs. You can learn more about the qualities of these hardwoods on our hardwood sample pages.
Wood Finish: Select the finish to match your choice of hardwood. You can learn more about the qualities of these finishes in our hardwood sample pages.
The most common wood finish choice on our baby cribs is oil & wax. The most popular hardwoods are oak and cherry.
Conversion Kits: By adding a kids bed conversion kit, you can remove the front crib panel and replace it with a board -- this board covers up any gaps between the mattress and bottom of the kids bed. The kids bed utilizes the same mattress as the baby crib, and is appropriately sized for young children. (Note: A kids bed is also commonly referred to as a day bed). The conversion kit is created in the same hardwood and finish as your crib.
A full sized bed conversion kit converts a crib into a standard full-sized bed. With the conversion kit, you remove the two side panels and replace them with side rails. Bed slats are also added. The full-sized bed utilizes a standard full-sized mattress and box spring. The conversion kit is created in the same hardwood and finish as your crib.
Front Panel: A flip-down front panel allows you to flip the topmost portion of the crib's front panel up and down, in order to reach your child more easily.
When using the flip-down mechanism, the front panel of the crib stays in place as shown in this photo.
Here is another photo of the hardware used. The panel will not flip down unless the mechanism on each side is depressed.
The flip-down front panel is not available on the dreamtime or harmony crib styles, due to the curved front panel.
Casters: A set of four casters allows you to easily move your crib. When you're not moving the crib, the caster wheels can be locked into place.
When attatched to the bottom of the crib, the casters assembly raises the height of the crib by 3.5".
Casters are not available on the Bethlehem or Dreamtime cribs, due to the curved legs.
Baby Crib Mattress
Our Amish crafted mattresses are created from certified organic materials, and do not contain the toxic materials present in conventional mattresses.
Our baby crib mattresses are created with organic cotton fabric on top, organic wool batting to provide a child-safe flame retardant.
Reaching Your Child Inside the Baby Crib
On all of our crib designs, the the metal frame supporting the mattress can be raised or lowered into one of four locked positions as shown in this photo.
We offer an option on most of our cribs that allows the front panel to flip down, allowing you easier access to the interior of the crib (please see above for more details).
We can also adjust the height of the crib legs -- it's easy for us to raise or lower the crib by a few inches.
If none of these options suffice, then we can create a matching footstool or bench to help you reach inside of the crib more easily.
Baby Crib Construction
Our furniture is 100% American-made, and is created from American-made hardware and American-grown hardwoods. Your purchase of an Erik Organic furniture piece directly supports the rural Midwestern economy. Each crib is created from solid hardwoods that are locally grown and harvested in the Upper Midwest.
The frames of our baby cribs are created entirely from the solid hardwood chosen: a cherry crib is 100% solid cherry, an oak crib is 100% solid oak. There is no softwood substitute, plywood filler, pressed wood, "select hardwoods" or veneers used in our baby cribs.
The bottom slats, which support the mattress, are created from durable steel.
